Gregg L. Parker for the Madison Spirit
ENTREPRENEUR OF THE WEEK: JANET NESIN
What: Nesin Therapy Services
Who: Janet Nesin, founder
What it does: Serves as a private practice for physical therapy "with the largest team of physical therapists and orthopaedic clinical specialists in North Alabama," Nesin says. Clinics in Huntsville and Madison treat a broad spectrum of health problems.
Employees: 20 therapists, 10 administrative
Company history: Founded in 1987 as a private practice. Nesin's vision was two-fold: Provide and maintain the highest standard of physical therapy treatment for clients while ensuring a caring environment for employees. With Sandy Kimbrel, a licensed physical therapist assistant, Nesin began serving clients through home health agencies and skilled nursing facilities. In 1999, she discontinued contract services and transitioned solely to outpatient services. The practice has expanded to 30 employees in two clinics.
For the future: Develop community education programs and a post-doctorate residency program with the American Physical Therapy Association.
Secret of success: Combine a commitment to professional development, excellent one-on-one care and extensive community involvement to derive the best referral base: word of mouth.
Biggest mistake: Limiting contracts initially to a few agencies. Losing a large contract, because of changes in health care regulation, was detrimental to company growth. "Moving away from contracting and expanding our own referral base was the key to revitalizing the company."
